Welcome to the Stop Motion Studio 27 beta
Thanks for testing! Stop Motion Studio 27 is a big update, so some things have moved. This page shows you where they went. The full manual for 27 comes with the release.
Before you start
- Duplicate a movie before you open it. Opening a movie in the beta updates it, and older versions of Stop Motion Studio can't open it anymore. The app asks you before it does this. Duplicate the movies you care about first, and keep the copies for the older version.
- Some new things won't show on other devices yet. If you move a movie to Windows or Android, looks, overlays, faces and other new things may be missing or look different there.
- Things can still break. That's what the beta is for. Please tell us when they do.
What's new
- A brand-new timeline: see your whole movie at a glance. Move, stretch and split sounds, music, texts, faces and looks right on the timeline.
- Overlays and effects: put your own pictures, scenery and animated effects like fire, rain and sparks on top of your movie.
- Looks and transitions: blend one part of your movie into the next, and give any part a filter, brighter colors, or a flip, zoom or turn.
- Green screen backgrounds: change the background any time, even after you've shot.
- Faces that come alive: faces find your character's head, then blink, talk and look around.
- Text that moves: new text styles and speech bubbles that fade, slide or zoom in.
- Lots of new sounds: over 100 sound effects, music sorted by mood, voice effects like Robot and Echo, and voice recording right into your movie.
- Clean Up and Fix: erase rigs and hands, or straighten a frame that came out crooked.
- Recently Deleted: bring back a movie you deleted by mistake.
Where did it go?
| In the old app | In 27 |
|---|---|
| The movie editor's timeline | Two modes: Frames shows every frame, Movie shows the timeline with a bar for each sound, text and look. Switch with the slider next to the frames. |
| Tap a frame for the edit menu | Tap a frame, and its buttons appear along the bottom: Hold, Insert, Copy, Cut, Paste and Delete. |
| Making a frame stay longer | Tap the frame, then Hold. |
| Scenes | Gone. Use Create → Look to change how part of your movie looks, and Create → Look → Transition to blend one part into the next. |
| Movie effects and filters | Create → Look → Filter. |
| Foregrounds | Create → Overlay → Foreground. |
| Adding a picture on top | Create → Overlay → Picture. Each overlay has its own picture. To use a different picture, delete the overlay and add a new one. |
| Backgrounds and green screen | Create → Background. |
| Adding a frame from a theme | Create → Blank Frame: a color, gradient or texture. |
| Titles and text | Create → Text. A text lasts as long as its bar on the timeline. Drag the end of the bar to change it. |
| My Audio | Create → Audio, then Sounds, Music or Record. |
| Deleted movies | Deleted, in the list on the left of the home screen. |
Everything you add with Create starts on the frame you're on, so move to the right frame first.
Tell us what you find
- In TestFlight: take a screenshot in the app and tap Share Beta Feedback, or open the TestFlight app and tap Send Beta Feedback. Say what you did, what you expected, and what happened.
- Crashes are sent to us on their own. A note on what you were doing helps a lot.
- Missing something from the old app? Tell us that too. It helps us decide what comes back.
Thank you for helping make Stop Motion Studio better!
